About

Jim is a Research Fellow at the Met Office and a Professor at Exeter University. He has a wide range of research interests including the measurement and modelling of atmospheric aerosols, coupled ocean-atmosphere General Circulation Modelling, observations and modelling aviation induced cirrus, radiative transfer and radiative forcing and geoengineering using solar radiation management. Jim was a Lead Author of the IPCC Special Report on Aviation and the Global Atmosphere and a lead Author of the IPCC Third and Fourth Assessment Reports Working Group I Report. Jim is a Project Partner to the EU FP7 project, EU TRACE which began in June 2012. This pan-European research programme is charged with assessing the current knowledge of geoengineering from the trans-disciplinary perspective of the natural sciences, engineering, economics, ethics, politics and law, and communicating the findings to a broad international audience.Jim has written a number of recent peer reviewed articles on the climatic impacts of geoengineering stratocumulus cloud decks, and injection of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, and used modelling and measurements to investigate the impact of the recent volcanic eruption of Sarychev (2009) as an analogue for stratospheric geoengineering.
